The work of Evelyn Wolstenholme examines the themes of life and death; nature and nurture; love and loss; nostalgia and melancholy; growth and demise in close correlation to the behavioural instincts, of which not dissimilar to those of humans, seen in mother nature, particularly during lambing season.
As an artist, Evelyn is heavily influenced by her surroundings, drawing inspiration from the raw and primitive scenery of the Welsh landscape and coastlines, as well as it’s heritage. Through development, Evelyn finds herself incorporating the untranslatable welsh notion of “Hiraeth”: ‘the bittersweet memory of missing something or someone while being grateful of that/their existence” within her practice.
By using photography through documentary on analogue film, Evelyn hopes to remove and look beyond the rose-tinted spectacles and memories to re-examine her time of “girlhood” as a woman, seeking out physical and metaphorical metaphors. Exploring feelings of individual family relationship, parental shifts and role reversals throughout one’s life.
Born and raised in Altrincham, South Manchester, Evelyn was always passionate about Art and Creativity. After finishing at her local high school, she started upon her career in the arts by completing a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at The Manchester School of Art (Manchester Metropolitan University), before moving on to Swansea where she attained a First in BA(Hons) in Fine Art (Studio, Site and Context) and Swansea College of Art (University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Swansea). Recognising her love for Wales and the drive in which living by the sea gave her, Evelyn continues to live and work in Swansea, but often revisits her roots.
